Back in high school I made many pairs of Sculpey earrings. I sold some for about $3-$5 a pair. I kept the Gumby earrings and wore them constantly. I still have them.

Daniel seemed pretty excited about the idea of me drawing a cartoon of us, so I worked hard on this! It took me a long time to decide upon a color scheme, but I’m happy with the result.

This was my Christmas present to my space-loving mom: a watercolor painting of the Antennae Galaxies.

I thought that watercolors would be best for painting the ethereal swirls, but it was going to be difficult to paint these light colors on a dark background. Therefore, I used a multistep process that I invented myself:

  1. I opened the Hubble photo of the galaxies in Photoshop and inverted the colors (black became white, yellow became dark violet, etc.).
  2. I painted the inverted photo using watercolors.
  3. I drew individual stars with a fine-point black pen (this took forever).
  4. I scanned the painting and inverted the colors in Photoshop.
  5. I printed the finished product on fancy glossy paper.

I’m sure other artists have used a similar method, but I thought of it independently and I’m very proud of how well it worked.

Today I had pizza with my friend Amelia (and our moms—girl date!) and drew this picture of her.
